FAQS – working with a specialist equestrian and outdoors copywriter
If you’ve been following along on social media and think you might need my help, the chances are you have a couple of questions. In this blog I’m sharing some of the FAQs I receive about working with a specialist equestrian and outdoors copywriter and, of course, the answers you need! Of course, if you still have a burning question after you’ve read it, just drop me a line. For now, it’s time to dive into those commonly asked questions about my writing services:
What does a specialist equestrian and outdoors copywriter do?
Now that’s a good question. It’s nothing to do with copyrighting products and all about writing text for advertising, social media, websites or other forms of marketing. And, I specialise in equestrian and outdoors copywriting! You can see what makes me qualified to offer this service in a few minutes.
A copywriter adopts or develops your brand tone of voice and then creates amazing copy (words!). The aim is to help sell your products, convert website visitors to customers, share your back story, boost brand trust and so much more. I write everything from social media captions and landing pages to blogs, eBooks and marketing emails.
Can you tell me about the different kinds of businesses you work with?
Absolutely! I work with marketing and PR agencies who recognise the value of professionally written content. That might be writing all the social captions, blogs, emails and website updates for their clients or helping with press releases, editorial and advertorial. I also work with sole traders and businesses of all sizes to write marketing materials. That’s sometimes with the business owners and sometimes with their in-house marketing team. I really do work with all shapes and sizes!
Do you work on one-off projects?
Yes! If you need all your product captions polishing up or you’re desperate for a homepage re-write, talk to me. The same goes if you want to have a bank of blogs to upload over the year ahead. I work on a regular basis (weekly or monthly) with some clients, and for others they call me when they need my help on a specific project.
Marketing agency owners and brands also slot me in as and when they need to – in the run up to a busy event, when they’re in flux with new clients and if they have staff on maternity leave!
I like writing some marketing materials but not others – can you help?
This happens more often than you’d think! Some of my clients just love creating their own videos and social reels and just use me for emails and blogs. Other clients commission me to ghost write their captions for LinkedIn or pen their advertorial and editorial content.
How about samples, do you have a portfolio of your work?
Yes, I sure do! I can send a link to my online portfolio to anyone who works with me. There are some pieces of work that I can’t put in my portfolio (that’s when I’m working ‘white label’ for agencies), but I can talk to you about them. I do offer a small discount for brands and media sites who want editorial or blog content and will give me a byline and a link to my LinkedIn profile and/or website.
Who else do you work with in my sector? Will you work with my competitors?
I can’t share my client list here, but if you chat to me in person, I’m happy to discuss some of them with you. I’ve had competitors calling up clients to try to steal them and I’ve also signed NDAs with some marketing agencies regarding the work I do with their clients. If when we talk it turns out I work with a close competitor, I will tell you. I need to avoid a conflict of interest arising! I do work with lots of businesses in the same sectors (think horses, fieldsports, rural lifestyle, women’s fashion and adventure brands) and it delivers benefits. It means I know common customer profiles, industry issues and sector terminology!
What makes you qualified to work on my business?
I’ve worked with a range of business to business (B2B) business to consumer (B2C) and third sector (that’s charities!) organisations in my 16 years of working in PR and marketing. I’ve been a copywriter for the past six of those 16 years, and I wrote oodles of marketing content in my communications roles prior to specialising.
I have a BSc in Equine Science and worked in the equine industry for 10 years as a groom, head lass and stud hand. I’m constantly upleveling my skills, honing my craft with courses and keeping my finger on the pulse of the latest industry trends. I’m also immersed in the world of outdoors, adventure, equestrian and rural living. I shoot, fish, ski and ride whenever I can, so I know my 12 bore from a .416, a Ben from a Munroe and fetlocks from forelocks!
How much does it cost to work with you?
Copywriting: I have fixed prices for blogs, website pages, emails and social media captions. If you have a lot of copy that you’d like me to write, I can create packages that are bespoke to your needs! I also create bespoke estimates for more complex projects I work on (for example writing brand guidelines, a full website of copy or a bulk batch of emails to be delayed over the coming year. I don’t charge a retainer, but I do ask for 50% of the project cost up front for projects and larger pieces of work, with the remaining balance due when the project is complete.
Editorial: This varies greatly depending on the publication, sector and other factors. If you work for a publication with a strong readership and online following and will give me a byline and link back to my website, I can offer a discounted rate on blogs and articles for your website.
How can I work with you to get into magazines?
I offer a limited number of PR consultancy sessions a year. These are designed to help you get your business to a place where you’re ready for PR before we work together to get you in the press! I’ve got great relationships with editors and journalists working at publications in the equestrian, fieldsports and rural lifestyle sectors, as well as national generalist press in the UK.
I also write editorial for a selection of magazines and new sites. In those cases, I work with experts in my different sectors to offer their thoughts and comments in my articles. For example, I’ve worked with John Rigby & Co, Corvedale Equestrian and Graveney Equine in the past year to support my writing.
Can you upload my blogs to my website and schedule social media?
Yes, I do this for some of my clients – some of whom hate tech and avoid it like the plague! Others take my words and weave them into their marketing. Just tell me what you prefer. Please note that I don’t offer social media management at this time (e.g. responding to comments and elevating customer service issues).]
